On Nov. 17, at approximately 3:36 a.m., deputies responded to a two-vehicle accident near Austin Park Drive and Richmond Highway that left one vehicle on its side with the driver trapped inside.

Deputy C.T. Richardson assisted the driver of the overturned Chevrolet out of the vehicle and into an ambulance, according to a spokesperson from the Stafford County Sheriff's Office, while a second deputy spoke with the driver of a Honda also involved in the crash.

The Honda driver, 24-year-old Annandale native Walter Sanchez Amaya, claimed that "David," a driver he had just met that day, caused the crash and fled the scene before deputies arrived; however, witnesses confirmed that Sanchez was the driver.

Sanchez showed signs of intoxication and admitted to consuming three Modelo beers, investigators said. Deputies also found a broken Heineken bottle in his vehicle.

A check revealed that Sanchez had an outstanding bench warrant from the Maryland State Police.

The investigation determined that the victim was traveling southbound on Richmond Highway when she noticed the Honda stopped partially on the shoulder and partially in the right lane.

Before she could react, the Honda accelerated and merged into her vehicle, causing the accident.

The victim sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital as a precaution. Sanchez was not injured.

Sanchez was charged with driving under the influence and fugitive from justice. He is being held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
